When you suffer from a medical condition called gout, then the diet is a vital component of the disease’s management and treatment. This is because many foods contain purines. Purines, once metabolized or broken down produce uric acid as the by-product. When the uric acid levels reach peak levels, then this could lead to the formation of tiny uric acid crystals that lodge in the joints and causing inflammation or what is commonly known as gout. Foods that are rich in carbohydrates such as, bread, rice and cereals are good for gout. Additionally, it’s better if you opt for low-fat and low –sugar foods as well as low –fat dairy products such as yogurt and skim milk. Tofu is a great alternative for meats, and a good source of protein as well. Since organ meats, red meats and game meats (e.g. goose, duck) contain moderate to high amounts of purine. So it is better to avoid these meats or to limit your intake.
When you choose fish and seafood, be sure that you exclude those that are rich in purines such as scallops, mussels, herring, anchovies and salmon to name some. Furthermore, alcoholic beverages particularly beer is rich in purines so these are greatly avoided. As for the beverages, it is better that you load up on fruits juices particularly cherry fruit juice.
