Gout Diet Restrictions: Limit animal protein

Most animal protein sources such as meats contain great amounts of purines. These include beef, lamb, turkey, and organ meats (liver, kidney and brain). Some kinds of fish like, sardines, tuna and anchovies and seafood like shrimps, mussels and scallops contain high purines as well and they increase the risk of gout. Meats are usually top the gout diet restrictions so choose plant-based protein sources instead. So it is important to limit the intake of these animal protein food sources to 4 to 6 ounces per day and choose lean meats like white meat.

Gout Diet Restrictions: Limit high-fat and high –sugar foods

When you have gout, it is imperative to choose low-fat foods. Choose skim milk or low-fat milk, low-fat cheeses and yogurt. Fat should be limited to 30 % to total calories. Also choose fruits and vegetables since they are low in fat. Also prefer foods that are baked rather than fried. Eating to many sweets is not good as well. So avoid high- sugar foods and eat sweets in moderation.
Alcohol consumption is limited, particularly beer because it can impede removal of uric acid from the body. If you have a gout attack then it is best to avoid alcohol. But if you are not having one, then one to two 5-ounce servings a day is still acceptable and will not put you at risk. Adequate fluid intake, particularly water of at least 8 glasses a day is recommended.

The gout diet restrictions is not that hard to familiarize with, just keep in mind that they center on high –purine foods which are mostly animal meats. Following these dietary restrictions, along with medication compliance can help limit uric acid levels in the body and can help prevent gout attacks and even reduce its severity.
